Prehistoric and 19th Century Art of the American
Eskimo and Northwest Coast
North by Northwest Arts is the on-line
presence of Jeffrey Myers Primitive Art.
Mr. Myers has specialized
in the American Eskimo for the last 30 years, of which 25 have been
spent living and field collecting among the Bering Sea
Eskimo.
This experience has
provided substantial knowledge of the prehistoric cultures, its
peoples and the material culture. Although a frequent visitor
to the mainland areas, most of his time has been spent living
in the village of
Savoonga, St. Lawrence
Island. St. Lawrence Island is the area where
the earliest cultural periods with an artistic tradition originates,
and he has often stayed 3 months, the duration of the digging
season.
The 19th
century holdings are comprised of objects produced for internal
utilization. Notably present are ceremonial dance masks both
Inupiat and Yupik, animal effigies and amulets related to
“Inua” and the hunting cultures. Kayaks, clothing and hunting
gear are continually in inventory.
Walrus ivory
pipes and Nunivak Island tusks are represented and,
although made for sale or trade, as the carving and
engraving techniques may represent fine examples of earlier
styles.
Northwest coast art has
been a sustaining passion and representational objects are
continually sought. Frontlets, masks, rattles, bowls and weavings
are usually represented in inventory. We are fortunate to have
an exceptional collection of 15 Haida and Tlingit goat and sheep
horn spoons, assembled over a ten year period.
Jeffrey Myers Primitive
Arts has consulted to exhibitions and auction houses. We assemble
collections, document objects, evaluate and appraise. We also buy,
sell and trade.
Memberships are held in
the Art and Antique Dealers League of America, the International
Appraisers Association and the Explorers Club.
